16th avenue mosque
CLIENT: Islamic Society of Markham
Masjid Darul Iman

6210 16th Ave
Markham, Ontario

This 25,000 sq. ft. place of worship development located at the shores of Swan Lake overlooks a panorama of walking trails and parklands. The Mosque is comprised of a main prayer hall, upper mezzanine, and a lower community center facility. The landscape architecture is integral to the built form connecting the mezzanine to an accessible environmental green roof, and connecting the lower community facility to the exterior gardens thru a series of living wall light wells. Surrounding the architectural are water features and tranquil gathering spaces inspired by Chahar-Bagh garden principles. This design interpretation is based on the eight sided star with reflecting pools and seating areas created to engage conversation and contemplation.
